Brazen: Marked by flagrant and insolent
audacity. Impudent; immodest; shameless. Clear and obvious, without
any attempt to be hidden.
My work is an exploration of the universal experience of “being
human”. In my figurative work, I investigate the way that
a particular downturn of the mouth, a slump of the shoulders, a
furrow of the brow can communicate a private thought or feeling.
I am interested in the unabashed expression of a person’s
inner-most thoughts, from the fear of never finding love, to the
struggle to fully embrace one’s inner and outer beauty. In
a time in which the break down of the family unit, rise of technology,
and emphasis on the individual are creating deepening levels of
disconnection, there is a great need to re-establish intimacy in
our lives; my work serves as a reminder of that need.
Historically, I engaged primarily in video art and painting. My
videos are performance-based, and I act out a story line to the
viewer as if allowing them to witness an intimate moment in my life.
I seek directness in these pieces, and do not use intricate editing
or sets. My paintings are sometimes based on photos I take of friends,
sometimes directly from my imagination. As in my videos, I seek
to tell personal stories through paint. In the last few years I
have begun to explore how I can bring painting, video and other
media together to tell stories in more powerful ways and draw the
viewer deeper in.
